Practice Based Learning

Practice Based Learning (PrBL) is integral to the learning and professional development in all our health and social care pre-registration programmes. Students on these programmes spend approximately 30% to 50% of the overall programme of study on practice placements.

Practice Based Learning (PrBL)

PrBL is integral to the learning and professional development of our health and social care pre-registration programmes.

Professional regulation

Not only are practice placements ideal environments for experiential learning and consolidating theory, but the hours students complete in PrBL situations are required for professional regulation within the UK. Successful completion of pre-registration awards in the subject areas of biomedical science, counselling psychology, diagnostic imaging, dietetics, nursing, occupational therapy, oral health science, orthoptics, paramedic science, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiotherapy and oncology, lead to graduate eligibility to register with one of the following regulatory bodies: General Dental Council (GDC); Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC); Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC); and the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

Practice environment

Our practice-based learning approaches have been developed to reflect the aims of each programme of study and to ensure that opportunities exist for students to develop and apply theoretical knowledge, consolidate and extend practical skills, refine problem solving and clinical reasoning abilities, and advance a reflective approach to professional practice. PrBL is designed to prepare students for future practice by equipping them with the skills and knowledge to respond to the demands of the ever-changing practice environment. Placements are carefully planned to provide each student with experience in the core areas of practice in a range of different practice settings, thus encouraging them to develop a keen sense of their role within their own respective profession.
