Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Management

The Department of Civil Engineering and Environmental Management (CEEM) offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, professional training and consultancy in Environmental Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering,  Fire Risk Engineering, Environmental Management, Sustainable Urban Environments and Climate Justice. With 39 academic staff CEEM is the largest Department in the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment and staff are active in applied research across the Department’s disciplines.

The Department hosts two University Research Centres. The research of the Centre for Built Environment Asset Management focuses on the social, environmental and economic interdependencies of sustainable built environments in the context of global climate change and natural resource utilisation. The Centre for Climate Justice takes a global lead in the delivery of action research to improve policy development and to provide critical insights into climate justice. The Department also hosts 4 Research Groups: Power and Renewable Energy Systems, Sustainable Materials and Structures, Water and Nature Based Solutions and Eco Engineering. Much of the research activity involves staff from other Departments and Schools.

The Department is committed to delivering quality education and research that is aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Commitment to the SDGs is believed to be essential to the realisation of social, economic and environmental sustainability, to addressing the climate emergency outlined in the report by the IPCC and the biodiversity/ecosystem crisis described by the IPBES.
