Responsible Management Education at GCU
Why Glasgow Caledonian University is a signatory to the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME)
The GCU Commitment
Glasgow Caledonian University’s participation, led by Glasgow School for Business and Society, demonstrates its commitment to the PRME principles, ensuring they are strategic, and embedded not only in its teaching, learning, and research, but also in the way that the School is managed.
Developed in 2007, PRME is a United Nations Global Compact-backed initiative to promote and inspire responsible management education and research in academic institutions around the globe.
As a PRME signatory,GCU declares its willingness to progress in the implementation of the following Principles:

- Values: We will incorporate into our academic activities, curricula, and organisational practices the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the United Nations Global Compact
- Method: We will create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership
- Research: We will engage in conceptual and empirical research that advances our understanding about the role, dynamics, and impact of corporations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value
- Partnership: We will interact with managers of business corporations to extend our knowledge of their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges
- Dialogue: We will facilitate and support dialog and debate among educators, students, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organisations and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability

GCU PRME Champions Output: PRME Blueprint for SDG Integration
Since 2013, GCU has been a designated “PRME Champion” Institution. The mission of the PRME Champions group, made up of some 40 business schools worldwide, is to contribute to thought and action leadership on responsible management education in the context of the United Nations sustainable development agenda.
In so doing, PRME Champions commit to:
- Work collaboratively to achieve higher levels of performance in transforming business and management education in five key areas: curricula, research, educational frameworks, sustainability-based partnerships, and thought leadership.
- Serve the broader PRME community through active engagement with existing PRME Chapters, PRME Working Groups, Global Compact LEAD, and other global opportunities, as well as to support broader and deeper implementation of sustainability principles in the institutional context of the PRME initiative.
- Contribute to broader UN goals and issues, particularly helping to realize the Sustainable Development Goals.
The work of PRME Champions is organised in a series of two-year cycles, during which time its members participate in workshops and online working to produce resources for use by the global PRME community. Responding to calls for a practical, step-by-step guide on how to integrate the SDGs in to the curriculum, research, and partnerships, GCU’s Alec Wersun led a team of seven Champion Schools in producing the Blueprint for SDG Integration. The Blueprint has been downloaded thousands of times, and is being used by business schools around the world, as a guide on how to undertake this strategic task.

Reporting on Progress to the United Nations
Signatories to the United Nations PRME initiative are required to submit a bi-annual report to the United Nations, in which they restate their commitment to implement the Principles in to all educational activities, campus operations, and external engagement. The name of this report is a Sharing Information on Progress (SIP) report. GCU uses the SIP Report as a means of demonstrating to internal and external stakeholders its commitment and actions in support of sustainable development. Reading the various SIP Reports allows stakeholders to chart the University’s progress in implementing the Six Principles, and efforts to contribute to achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
