Aim
The aim of the project is to provide immediate financial relief for low-income households by improving their access to affordable, nutritious food. The project also addresses some of the underlying issues which may leave individuals and families vulnerable to hunger.
Summary
Threehills is Scotland’s first community supermarket located in the heart of the Nitshill area of Glasgow. Threehills is opening in March 2024 and will act as a hub for the community, providing an affordable supermarket, café, and community resource facilities. Whilst waiting for the main store to open, Good Food Scotland have opened six affordable larders throughout Glasgow.
What difference does it make?
This project enables those experiencing poverty to have the opportunity to shop for their own food and reduces the likelihood of members attending food banks. Many members attending these larders have already stated they do not attend the food bank as much as they are able to attend their local larder.
Key take-aways
- The project helps those experiencing poverty have a choice over the food that they eat and expands what they can buy.
- The project could easily be replicated throughout the United Kingdom in areas where residents are experiencing poverty, as it has been easily replicated in different areas throughout Glasgow.
- The model of the larder project is different from a pantry Fairshare model, they choose what they order into the larder and can ask their members what they would like in their local larder.
