Aim

The participatory research project aimed to uncover hidden geographies of poverty in Dublin and document lived experiences in tangible, visceral and visible ways.

Summary

The Walking, thinking and talking project documented the voices of people living in poverty in Ireland by using photographs, sound files, video/film, drawing/mapping, and drawing on a creative, walking-based methodology. The project was conducted by researchers from Trinity College Dublin in partnership with All Together in Dignity (ATD) Ireland. Through the project, an artefact in the form of an animated short film, developed in conjunction with the research participants, was created for use as a resource by ATD. The project generated relevant research data for ATD and related support and advocacy groups in their work with people experiencing poverty.

What difference does it make?

The project and subsequent research report highlight that childhood poverty impacts all areas of life. This can be seen through the lack of options available to a person, along with socio-economic discrimination and stigma connected to poverty and experienced by many. The report and animation show how divided society is.
