Department of Occupational Therapy, Human Nutrition and Dietetics

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists work with people who have physical, emotional or social problems and use a variety of activities to help them to reach their maximum level of independence and take control of their lives.

The mission of occupational therapy at GCU is to advance an understanding of the specific contribution of occupation in the promotion of health and well-being within individuals and communities. This is achieved through the delivery of high quality teaching, research and knowledge transfer involving clients, students, employers, voluntary agencies and the wider public sector.

Human Nutrition & Dietetics

Nutritional science deals with the effect of the food we consume on our bodies, while dietetics applies the science of nutrition to the prevention and treatment of disease and the promotion of health.

Dietitians assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems at an individual and wider public health level. They use up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, society, health and disease, which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.

The team’s expertise in public health nutrition, clinical and community dietetics, health promotion and sports nutrition helps to inform our teaching on a wide range of modules across several programmes in nutrition and dietetics.

Glasgow Caledonian University has a long track record in nutrition and dietetics education, with the longest running Dietetics programme in the UK, and an excellent reputation within the profession for the high calibre of our graduates. This is achieved by top quality teaching (as evidenced by NSS data) alongside the development of independent learning skills in the students to allow them to reach their full potential.

Our newly refurbished nutrition kitchen laboratory provides an excellent teaching facility for students to develop practical skills. Many specialist topics are taught by currently practising dietitians and nutritionists who are invited to the university to share their expertise with the students.
