Department of Podiatry and Radiography
The Department of Podiatry and Radiography embraces the disciplines of Diagnostic Imaging, Medical Ultrasound, Podiatry and Radiotherapy and Oncology and is one of three Allied Health Science Departments within the School of Health and Life Science. The department is also host to the BSc Oral Health Science programme accredited by Glasgow Caledonian and delivered at both the Glasgow Dental Hospital and Glasgow Caledonian's campus. Our multidisciplinary team is committed to the pursuit of excellence in learning and teaching, research, knowledge transfer, internationalisation and business development.
We deliver an extensive range of undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD training programmes and are keen to establish partnerships and share learning across the university. The student journey, graduate attributes and employability sit at the heart of our department’s strategic priorities. We strive to be a department that is energized, excellent and engaged, to ensure an outstanding student experience that equips our graduates with the knowledge, skills and confidence to be fit-for-purpose professionals, global citizens and future leaders and influencers of their chosen professions. We aim to inspire our graduates to make a positive impact on society and ‘improve lives.’
The department hosts a vibrant international community of students from across the globe. Opportunities for student exchange, and international elective placement and volunteering experiences are encouraged. Podiatry academic staff have internationally recognised clinical expertise and are regularly invited to participate as clinical leaders at world sporting events such as the European Games, Commonwealth Games, and the Special Olympics which has facilitated international volunteering opportunities for our pre-registration students.
In addition, the BSc Honours Podiatry course offers students the opportunity to undertake an HCPC-recognised international exchange with La Trobe University, Melbourne Australia - this is the only HCPC-recognised international exchange for Podiatry within the UK.
All students have access to our highly sophisticated Inter-Professional Simulation centre (ISC). This provides opportunities to gain valuable skills and experience within a safe and controlled environment. The department has recently invested in a state-of-the-art Direct Radiography (DR) system and top-of-the-range ultrasound equipment and scan trainer simulation facilities. The ISC also includes a Radiotherapy Planning Suite, mini PACS system, ward, Podiatry clinic and emergency department as well as simulated home environments to practice community-based health care. The Department is the largest provider of Diagnostic Imaging, Radiotherapy and Podiatry graduates and the only provider of CASE-accredited Medical Ultrasound programmes, in Scotland. Our undergraduate courses have a track record of 100% graduate employment within six months of graduation.

Research
The department also fosters a vibrant, dynamic and internationally recognised research community undertaking a substantial number of active projects and programmes of research across a range of research areas in particular: Musculoskeletal and Neurological Rehabilitation and Active Living. Our world leading researchers are internationally recognised for generating high impact research addressing global societal challenges in line with the University’s mission for the Common Good.
Practice placement and simulated learning
We have partners in four health boards, one of which is the biggest in Scotland, providing a range of general and specialist placements. 10 Scottish NHS Board areas support Podiatry placements. Clinical placements provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills and first post competencies, required to register as a practicing radiographer or podiatrist in the UK. The department also has access to the School’s Inter-Professional Simulation centre (ISC), which creates a safe and realistic hospital environment to practice skills and techniques. The ISC includes a state -of-the-art Digital Radiography suite, top of the range ultrasound equipment and scan trainer simulation facilities, a Radiotherapy Planning Suite, mini PACS system, ward, Podiatry clinic and emergency department as well as simulated home environments to practice community based health care. Our Human Performance Laboratory is utilised by our world leading Musculoskeletal Research Team.
Our Student Liaison Team at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital was nominated and won Scottish Radiography Team of the Year for enhancing the placement experience of Glasgow Caledonian students
