Workplace Wellness Hub
Who are we?
Workplace Wellness is a hub of the Ageing Well research group within the Research Centre for Health at Glasgow Caledonian University. The Workplace Wellness Hub is open to those with an interest in workplace-related research and practice. Current members include those with a background in psychology, engineering, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and nursing.
What is our purpose?
The aim of the group is to maximise the ability of the employee to undertake safe, valued, and productive work, and to extend working lives. To achieve this, the group are working on a multi-disciplinary basis using different methodologies to:
(1) Conduct research to understand factors that compromise safe and valued work among employees of all ages, including those with a chronic health condition.
(2) Develop and implement interventions to promote the physical and psychological health and well-being of employees of all ages, including those with a chronic health condition.
The work of the group aligns with the good health and wellbeing sustainable development goal. The group provides the opportunity for internal and external collaboration, including international collaboration, hosts internal and external speakers and seeks to promote wide research collaborations and, patient and public engagement.
Current and recent projects
- Work with Pain project: aims to understand how we can best support people with chronic pain to be in good and valued work with their pain. Principal Investigator: Dr Joanna McParland.
- OPTIMA: aims to conduct a systematic literature review assessing the quantitative and qualitative evidence for behaviour change techniques promoting long-term physical activity in people with intermittent claudication. Funder: National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment. Co-investigator: Dr Ukachukwu Abaraogu: Professor Dawn Skelton, Dr Jo McParland, Dr Chris Seenan, Dr Philippa Dall, Dr Andrew Elders.
- T4VET :aims to evaluate the impact of a progressive employment training scheme on the confidence levels, work readiness, employability and mental health of veterans. Funder: Forces in Mind Trust. Co-investigators: Professor Artur Steiner, Shirley Morrison-Glancy, Dr Philippa Dall.
- Exploring resilience in adolescents with chronic pain and their parents. PhD Funder: The Pain Relief Foundation. Co-investigator: Dr Jo McParland
- A Scoping Review To Ascertain The Parameters For An Evidence Synthesis Of Intervention Seeking To Improve Work And Wellbeing Outcomes Among Employees With Chronic Pain. Funder: Chief Scientist Office. Principal Investigator: Dr Jo McParland.
- Levels of resilience, anxiety and depression in nurses working in respiratory clinical areas during the COVID pandemic. Principal Investigator: Dr Nicola Roberts.
- The Work With Pain project: a systematic review and meta-analysis of psychological interventions seeking to improve work outcomes among individuals with chronic pain. GCU investigators: Dr Joanna McParland, Professor Lisa Kidd and Dr Ukay Abaraogu.
