Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit
The Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit (SPVU) was founded in 1990 at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow. The unit principally investigates and treats patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
Dr David Welsh is Head of Basic Science Research Group at the SPVU and is based at Glasgow Caledonian University. David's main interests involve looking into translational approaches to help understand the underlying causes of pulmonary hypertension. The work involves both molecular signalling on a cellular level to pre-clinical development of novel PH therapies. The research undertaken in the laboratory has contributed to the development of a novel potential PH drug which is being tested in clinical trials at present.
