Abdominal Massage in Intellectual Disabilities: The AMID study

Study name: Tailored abdominal massage treatment for constipation in adults with learning disabilities – A feasibility study

About the study

Adults with learning disabilities (LD) have a 50% increased risk of constipation compared to the general population with one-third of adults with LDs in the UK experiencing constipation. The research team based in the NMAHP Research Unit, has completed two studies looking at the benefit of abdominal massage for people with bothersome constipation.

One study delivered the massage via a carer or the participant themselves; we referred to this as manual abdominal massage. The other study used a device (The Mowoot massage belt) to deliver the massage.

Abdominal Massage by both manual and by the Mowoot belt has achieved positive results. The AMID study would like to see if abdominal massage could be a possible treatment for adults with learning disabilities.
