G-AP
What is this research about?
People who have had a stroke (stroke survivors) have individual hopes for the future and goals they would like to achieve. Rehabilitation aims to help stroke survivors meet these personal goals.
The Goal setting and Action Planning (G-AP) framework
The G-AP framework has been developed to support person-centred, goal-setting practice in rehabilitation settings.
A G-AP online training resource and supplementary webinars have been developed to support rehabilitation staff to deliver G-AP in practice.
A G-AP record, including an accessible version called Access G-AP, has been developed to ensure stroke survivors have an accessible copy of their goals, plans and progress.
What are the aims of this research?
The G-AP programme of research aims to:
Understand how stroke survivors can be supported to pursue their personal goals, including those that may be proving difficult to achieve
Develop different versions of the G-AP record to suit individual stroke survivors’ preferences and abilities
Understand how rehabilitation teams can be supported to implement G-AP in routine practice
Find out if G-AP helps stroke survivors’ recovery and improves the rehabilitation they receive.
Eleanor Brown, a Speech and Language therapist by background, completed her PhD, ‘Goal setting accessibility for stroke survivors with aphasia in rehabilitation’, in 2021. Eleanor’s work led to the development of Access G-AP which aims to support stroke survivors with a communication difficulty called aphasia to be optimally involved in the G-AP process. Eleanor can be contacted at: eleanor.brown@mailbox.org.
Katie Elliott, an Occupational Therapist by background, is a PhD student leading a project to understand how rehabilitation teams can be supported to implement G-AP in routine practice. She can be contacted at Katherine.Elliott@gcu.ac.uk
