Race Equality Charter
Glasgow Caledonian University has achieved Advance HE's Race Equality Charter Bronze Award in recognition of its work to combat racism and support race equality.
Our commitment to the Race Equality Charter (REC) is part of a long-standing, whole institution approach to prioritise tackling racism and racial inequalities.
The Race Equality Charter (REC) is a national scheme that provides a framework for higher education institutions to recognise, investigate and challenge barriers to the recruitment, progression and retention of their Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic staff and students.
The plan, as well as our full Race Equality Charter application, will be published soon.
Glasgow Caledonian is one of 100 REC members, holding 57 awards between them. The award remains valid for five years.
“The award has laid the groundwork to help us transform the University by putting racism under the microscope. I'm delighted that we have reached this significant milestone.’’
Dr Davena Rankin
Alongside Dr Rankin, key staff leading our REC application and related work are our Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Adrian Lui, EDI Officer Tabitha Nyariki, and SAT Chair and Vice Principal People & Student Wellbeing Fiona Campbell.

Tackling racism at Glasgow Caledonian
We have taken a proactive, whole institution approach to prioritise the tackling of racism and racial inequalities. After a strategic discussion at our People Committee, a sub-committee of University Court, in March 2019, a Tackling Racism Group was established to develop recommendations for the University.
The Committee and our Executive Board approved a set of recommendations in October 2020 for the University to implement. These were informed by external evidence and internal expertise and the lived experience of our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic student community as well as academic, research and professional support staff.

Advance HE Tackling racism on campus project
Glasgow Caledonian has been an active member of Advance HE’s Tackling racism on campus project.
The project is funded by the Scottish Funding Council in response to the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s report into racial harassment on university campuses. It is led by an expert group of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion practitioners, academics, tertiary education staff and students.
The project has been developing evidence-based resources to be used by Scottish universities and colleges as they respond the findings highlighted in the EHRC inquiry report.
