Energy

Glasgow Caledonian's Glasgow campus is powered by electricity and natural gas. Electricity is sourced from the National Grid and our on-site Energy Centre. Gas from the Scottish Gas Networks is used to power the Energy Centre and provide additional space and water heating. Gas is also used in our kitchens.

Energy consumption has been reducing across the campus year on year; in 2023-24 the University used around 7.9 GWh of electricity (46% generated onsite) and 22.5 GWh of gas. In order to further lower consumption, the operation of the Energy Centre has been under review and is being optimised to produce more heat and generate more electricity, with benefits for overall spend on energy and overall Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

The University’s Estate’s Carbon Neutrality Roadmap and associated Implementation Document (included as Appendix A in the link below) sets out five operating principles the University will adopt to transition its estate to carbon neutrality by 2040.
