Barriers to Cycling
In 2014 GCU was one of five HE/FE institutions in Scotland to pilot Cycling Scotland’s Cycle Friendly Campus Award. As part of the pilot of GCU, the Sustainability Team commissioned Level 3 students on “Marketing Assignment” module for the BA (Hons) Marketing programme to investigate barriers to cycling amongst students and staff and put forward proposals to help overcome these.
One group (Group K) investigated barriers to cycling amongst students, whilst the other (Group P) looked at staff (their reports are available below):
Insights from these projects helped refine GCU’s approach to promoting more active travel, overcome barriers to cycling and informed discussions between the University and a number of local stakeholders, such as Glasgow City Council, about the provision of cycle infrastructure in the city.
Through this and other projects, the proportion of students and staff cycling to the University increased from 2% to 3% and 4% to 10%, respectively (2015 Travel Survey Report).
