Water
Around 26,663 m3 of water was consumed on campus at Glasgow Caledonian (Glasgow campus) in 2022-23. This is equivalent to 1.2 m3 per person annually. In comparison, the University consumed 37,864 m3 of water (3.2 m3 per person) in 2018-19 which was the last full pre-pandemic year. Since then, the University`s water consumption has fallen by 34%. These reductions are attributed to a range of water-saving interventions:
- An enhanced ability to detect leaks
- Installing water-saving controls (such as motion sensors on taps and urinals) and equipment (such as energy-saving taps)
- Enhanced user awareness (for example, in labs)
- Installing foam soap dispensers (which require less water to rinse than liquid soap).
The Water Efficiency Plan and associated Implementation Document detail how the University will further reduce water consumption from its estate.

Our annual water use data is included in our GHG inventory data releases. As an urban campus, GCU is connected to Scottish Water’s supply and sewerage networks in Glasgow. Fresh water is sourced from Loch Katrine and all wastewater is collected for treatment.
