One voice can make a difference

“If my own story can help just one person then I’ll continue to share my experiences for as long as I can.”

I just want to be honest about what it’s like

Mental health struggles affect everyone differently, but one thing that can help anyone struggling is having someone to talk to. I’ve started opening-up about my own experiences and some days are still hard but being in an environment where those conversations are held safely and respected really helps with my journey.

Using social media for good

So often social media is used in ways that makes us feel bad. I want to use it for good. I’m just one voice, but the conversations I have with real people have a ripple effect. Once you open-up about your life and your struggles it can make someone else feel less alone and isolated. I never could have thought, even just a year ago, I would be where I am now and for that I’m so thankful.

GCU has given me confidence

Sometimes it’s just the confidence to keep going. Other times it’s the confidence to speak up about things. My lecturers have been so supportive, there’s a real open and honest atmosphere towards our own learning as the complex unique individuals that we all are. I’ve used the wellbeing service a lot and it’s really helped me in so many ways. I know I don’t need all the answers to everything right now, I’ve got a network of people around me and we work them out together.

Supporting your wellbeing whilst studying

Like Fiona, there are many ways GCU students can access support to foster positive mental health:

  • Speak to our Wellbeing Team – book an appointment with one of our Student Mental Health Advisors, access our range of self-care resources and attend our workshops and webinars
  • Access our free services like Nightline or Togetherall
  • Sing up to our onsite gym The Arc – use the gym facilities, attend our exercises classes or book our sports hall
  • Join a sports club or society at GCU Students’ Association – make new friends whilst pursing an activity or interest.
  • Unwind in our Relax and Renew space - the perfect place to take a break from studying or catch up with friends. Read a book, play a game or check out some of their wellbeing resources
  • Take a breather and get some fresh air in one of the many green spaces across campus.

“Sometimes it’s just the smallest act of kindness that can make all the difference to someone who’s struggling.”
