Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training for First Aiders

This half day course provides First Aid staff with the skills in adult basic life support and the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator). Individual and teamwork will be used to build skills and confidence in the use of AEDs. On completion of the course, candidates should be able to assess a collapsed victim, perform chest compression and rescue breathing (ventilation), operate an AED safely and correctly.
Where there are insufficient numbers of staff available to run a course on campus, staff may be able to attend a public course by First Aid Focus Ltd at their premises in the Adelphi Centre, 12 Commercial Road, Glasgow G5 0PQ.

Training will be in line with the employee’s obligation to comply with The Fire (Scotland) Act 2005, which became law in October 2006.

The Health and Safety Executive recommend that First Aid staff receive an annual refresher so that their skills can be maintained to ensure they continue to be prepared to competently handle emergencies within the workplace. This annual half day course provides first aiders with the necessary ongoing training in the years between requalification courses. It also includes a refresher on CPR/AED’s. This 3 day course aims to provide First Aid staff with the knowledge, confidence and abilities to deal with first aid emergencies in the University. Candidates will be continuously assessed throughout this course to ensure they achieved the necessary standards. Practical assessments include CPR, recovery position, dealing with spinal injuries, wounds and bleeding, fractures, shock and secondary assessment. Candidates will also have two theory tests to check their acquired knowledge and when they are successful candidates will be issued with a First Aid at Work certificate.

IOSH Managing Safely - online course

The IOSH Managing Safely course is delivered online via the internet with a project completed by the learner onsite and marked by an IOSH certificated consultant. Learners will gain a broad based knowledge of health and safety and safe systems of work to enable them to handle health and safety within their area. The course takes approximately 24 hours to complete and a period of 6 months is allowed for completion. The Online Managing Safely Refresher course is suitable for staff who have previously undertaken the full version IOSH Managing Safely course. It is IOSH’s view that it is best practice for Managing Safely certificate holders to renew their learning within a three year period. The refresher course provides learners with the latest best practice and legislation changes and ensures that their knowledge and best practice is completely up to date. Managing Safely Refresher is delivered and tested online. The course takes approximately 5 to 6 hours to complete and unlike the full Managing Safely course there is no requirement for a final written workplace project. A period of 6 months is allowed for completion. Delegates who successfully complete the online assessment at the end of the course are awarded an IOSH certificate in Managing Safely. The course has eight interactive modules which include video introductions and an online video tutor, six modules are mandatory and two are optional. The modules are:-

The British Safety Council Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment provides training in the core skills of risk assessment and is the essential building block for anyone who carries out, or is responsible for conducting a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. This is a 1 Day course run on campus. Following this staff will be required to carry out a risk assessment in their own area and submit this online to the British Safety Council for evaluation. A Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment will be gained following a successful evaluation (ie. a pass). On completion of the course, delegates will:
Understand the importance of risk assessments Understand the principles of controlling risks Understand how a risk assessment is undertaken While the Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment is a stand-alone qualification, it allows for lateral progression to other British Safety Council Level 2 qualifications covering specific risk assessments in COSHH, DSE, Fire and Manual Handling, and progression to the Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health.
