GCU to host SULCN annual conference

Law clinics from across the country will come together at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) to discuss access to justice next week (Wednesday, June 7).

GCU’s Law Clinic is hosting the Scottish Universities Law Clinic Network (SULCN) annual conference, titled ‘Access to Justice: Beyond the Campus’. It will examine how the clinics can better serve clients in rural and remote areas and how they can harness technology to improve access.

GCU law lecturer Dr Andrew Tickell and Martin Jones, Assistant Head of the University’s Law Department, are participating in plenary sessions and workshops, while former GCU law students Ryan Watson and Greg Scott – the first student director of the Law Clinic – will also be present.

Keynote speakers include the convenor of the Faculty of Advocates Free Legal Services Unit, Mungo Bovey QC, and Shona Simon, the President of Employment Tribunals (Scotland).

GCU Law Lecturer Claire McFadzean said: “We’re delighted to welcome such high-profile speakers to GCU. The SULCN conference will give law clinics from across Scotland the opportunity to come together to learn and exchange ideas. I’m sure this will be of huge benefit to our law students and, ultimately, our community.”

GCU’s Law Clinic was established in 2014. It provides free and confidential advice and assistance to those who do not qualify for Legal Aid and cannot afford to pay legal fees.
