Journalism student scoops RTS funding award

A Glasgow Caledonian University first-year student has been awarded a bursary by the Royal Television Society (RTS).

Elle Duffy, from Irvine, will receive the award towards her BA (Hons) in Multimedia Journalism. The RTS will give £1,000 per year to assist with expenses and living costs.

In addition, Elle will receive free membership of the RTS and The Hospital Club while studying. In her final year, the RTS will also aim to set-up mentoring opportunities with one of its industry members.

Elle, 18, who had taken a year out before studying to do a modern apprenticeship with STV, said: “I am delighted to have been awarded a bursary by the Royal Television Society. Not only will it be a great help in my studies at Glasgow Caledonian University, but will also provide networking and mentoring opportunities as I make my way in a competitive industry.

“They were impressed with the practical experience I have already gained and that I had been accepted onto the course at Glasgow Caledonian University, which they held in high regard.

“I have a real ambition in establishing a career in radio and broadcast journalism and the support of the Royal Television Society will further that.”

Elle was selected by a panel of industry professionals as one of 22 Television Production and Broadcast Journalism students from across the UK to receive a bursary.  

The RTS is Britain's leading forum for television and related media and an educational charity whose purpose is to promote the art and science of television. Its bursary scheme aims to widen participation in media and related industries and support talented students from lower income backgrounds seeking to pursue a career in television.

Theresa Wise, CEO of the Royal Television Society, said: “The schemes are important as they offer those from lower income backgrounds not only financial support, but access to mentoring and a network of contacts within the broadcasting industry.”
