GCU Law Clinic shortlisted for Scottish legal sector award

GCU Law Clinic, a student-led and student-run initiative, has been nominated for one of the Scottish legal sector's most prestigious awards.

The clinic, which provides free legal advice to those who do not qualify for legal aid and cannot afford professional advice, has been shortlisted in the Pro Bono category at the 2017 Law Awards of Scotland.

Now in their 14th year, the awards recognise excellence in the sector and are run by The Herald in association with HR Consultancy.

Claire McFadzean, the Law Clinic’s Academic Director, said: "I am immensely proud of our LLB students who work tirelessly to provide pro bono legal advice and support to those in our community who cannot otherwise access legal assistance.

"Our law students personify the common good ethos of GCU."

Students provide general legal advice, draft legal letters, represent clients in court and negotiate on behalf of clients in contractual disputes.

The two other nominees in the category are Govan Law Centre and University of Edinburgh Free Legal Advice Centre.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony at Glasgow’s Hilton Hotel on Thursday, November 30.
