Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) has named its Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year 2017.

Runner Alec Thomas and golfer Emma Hale were presented with their awards by Paul Morron, former President of the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council, on campus on June 29.

Alec was part of the University’s 4x200m relay team that won gold and broke the Scottish University Record at the Scottish Indoor University Championships. Recently called up to the Scotland squad for the forthcoming Celtic Nations University Championships, Alec also won gold at the Scottish Senior Indoor Championships.

Emma, meanwhile, is a member of GCU’s gold team and is 17th in the British Universities and Colleges Sport’s rankings for female golfers across the UK. A recipient of the R&A Student Scholarship, Emma was named this year’s Troon Ladies Club Champion and won the Ayrshire Ladies Golf Championship.

As well as sponsoring the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year award, Mr Morron also supports GCU’s Talented Athlete Programme.

“What impresses so much is not just the quality of athlete but the calibre of the person themselves,” he said. “To be recognised as top sportswoman and top sportsman of the year out of 20,000 students at GCU, shows a great deal about their character and dedication.

“Sport at all levels is important at GCU whether the motivation is simple enjoyment, good company and making friends, healthy exercise or the satisfaction of fulfilling sporting potential with the Talented Athletes Programme at its pinnacle.

“May it continue to prosper!”
