Nestor's prospects look Rocks solid

Nestor Lasuncion

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) student Nestor Lasuncion will be playing with the Glasgow Rocks in the British Basketball League (BBL) this season.

The Spanish playmaker, who is in his third year studying Media and Communications, has been training with the professional side for the past two seasons and is looking forward to the step up.

He has received help through the Talented Athlete Support Programme since he joined the University and has also represented GCU at British Universities Colleges Sport (BUCS) and Scottish Student Sport (SSS) level.

He said: “I knew about the programme before I came to GCU and its continued support over the past two years has given me the chance of playing at a higher level.

“Playing for the Scottish Unis was a great experience and allowed me to cross paths with a friend from back home in Spain.”

Twenty one year-old Nestor did not envisage basketball as a viable career growing up in Barcelona but his success in Scotland has led him to rethink his aims.

He said: "I still have room for improvement and I will see where basketball can take me.”

His familiarity with the surroundings at the Emirates Arena will make his transition easier, but having been chomping at the bit to play for two years, he is eager to challenge himself playing with and against seasoned pros and internationals.

He said: “Not everyone can say they played pro, so getting a deal with the Rocks is great and shows hard work pays off. The league is a huge step up and I can’t wait to play in front of a crowd.

“Playing two seasons in the National League (with Glasgow Storm) has toughened me up and going home to Spain this summer, I surprised my friends with my athletic and aggressive play.

“I am really excited to get started and see how my game evolves.

“My aspiration is to give basketball a go after my degree.”

Nestor remains hopeful that the Rocks can have a successful season, building on last season’s third place league finish and narrow loss in the BBL Cup final.
