Physio students get rub of the Green

Building on partnerships with the Scottish Football Association (SFA) and Scottish Rugby Union (SRU), Glasgow Caledonian University physiotherapy students will be providing welcome relief for competitors at the Grand Masters Hockey at Glasgow Green.

Beginning tomorrow, the event lasts until Sunday, 27 August, and will see a dozen pre-registration students offer massage treatment to players at ‘drop-in’ tents for pre and post-match treatment.

While these tents are at the disposal of all nations taking part, students Ian Stanley and Will Adams will be helping out the Scottish teams.

The tournament will see 55 teams from across Europe and as far away as Australia compete in five age groups: Mens O60s, Mens O65s, Mens O70s, Mens O75s and Womens O60s.

Physiotherapy@GCUClinic Manager Douglas Lauchlan said: “We were approached by the organisers and asked if we could provide students to help at three massage tents.

“All of those attending are trained masseurs but this experience will give them a flavour of the clinical skills and expectations along with the technical operation of an international event.

“Providing students with sporting-event experience, along with our partnerships with the SFA and SRU providing pitchside first-aid, are a unique selling point of the programme at GCU.”

The students will be helping out in sessions at the Scottish National Hockey Centre over the ten days and are expecting to be busy attending to two to three players an hour.

However, during their down time they will be able to take in some international hockey.
