Cara ignites sustainability awareness at Marie Claire forum

Marie Claire magazine hosted its first ever sustainability forum last week – and Glasgow Caledonian New York College was at the heart of it.

As an advisory board member, GCNYC Vice-President Cara Smyth helped Editor in Chief Anne Fullenwider curate the forum held at Hearst Tower in New York City.

Cara also moderated a panel of industry experts titled: “Why Should I Care?”, featuring the who, what and why of the environmental movement in fashion.

Cara led a conversation with Amanda Hearst and Hassan Pierre, co-founders of Maison de Mode; Marie-Claire Daveau, the Chief Sustainability Officer and Head of Institutional Affairs for Kering Group; and Shane Wolf, the GM World Wide for REDKEN, Pureology and Seed Phytonutrients at L’Oréal.

Cara asked each of the panelists a series of questions, in order to inspire discussion around how beauty and fashion interact with sustainability.

She said: “I applaud Anne Fullenwider’s pioneering leadership in distilling the complexities of social and environmental issues surrounding sustainability, providing a platform to consumers and amplifying the message of those truly making change.

“I was delighted to lead a conversation with industry leaders who are dedicated to redesigning the industry, and aligning business practices for the advancement of the global development agenda, and the betterment of people, planet, profit, peace and partnerships.”

The goal of the forum was to tap into empowering consumer culture: igniting awareness and inspiring action among Marie Claire thought leaders, readers and influencers.

Cara currently serves on the Marie Claire Sustainability Advisory Board and helped curate the first article featuring climate change in a glossy fashion magazine. Last August marked Marie Claire’s first-ever Sustainability Issue, celebrating the fashion-forward people and brands changing the world through cleaner living.

Marie Claire has since pledged to make its Sustainability Issue a recurring one, which will be released in print each August. Now, the publication is more committed than ever to leveraging fashion as a force to create global change.
