Common Good Awards celebrate inspirational students

The University has celebrated the achievements of its inaugural Common Good Awards winners.

The awards – developed to reflect the University’s mission for the Common Good – recognise students’ inspirational work to transform their communities in four key areas:  Active and Global Citizenship; Confidence; Entrepreneurial Mind-set; and Responsible Leadership.

Principal Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE presented awards to Andrew Gray (BA(Hons) Risk Management); Ashley Dewsbery (MEng Electrical Power Engineering); Chloe McGinlay (BA (Hons) Social Sciences); Fraser Digney (BA (Hons) International Business); Laura-Jane Howard (BA (Hons) International Business and HRM); Nathan Augeard (BSc (Hons)Physiotherapy) and Stephanie Boyle (BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology) at a ceremony for family and friends.

Professor Gillies said: “We are so proud of all of our students – the contribution they make is astonishing, and our inspirational winners are very special indeed. They bring to life the Common Good values and our commitment to our communities.”

Professor Ruth Whittaker, Director of Academic Quality and Development, said: “GCU is the University for the Common Good and that mission is threaded throughout the experience of being a student here. We aim to make a positive difference to the communities we serve and the awards recognise the amazing students who make that difference and their Common Good attributes.”

The winners were recognised for community work such as volunteering as a special constable, running drama class for young people who have Down’s Syndrome and supporting people with mental health challenges.
