Journalism graduate Stephen Crouse wins the 2018 Darren Joliny Prize

Graduate Stephen Crouse is this year's winner of the Darren Joliny Prize, in recognition of his outstanding performance in the BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism programme.

The annual prize is presented by the Joliny family in memory of Journalism graduate Darren. Darren died in 2012 aged 21 while playing football, shortly after completing his GCU degree.

Members of the Joliny family were on hand to watch as Darren's Mum Kathleen presented the award at a short ceremony in the Govan Mbeki Building during Tuesday's graduations.

Stephen said: "It is an absolute honour. I have worked really hard in the last couple of years and to get a reward like this is absolutely amazing."

Kathleen Joliny said: "All of us in the family feel really proud and happy that the University is remembering our son Darren in this way, and his life at the uni because he had such good fun here. I am so glad that he has left his mark."

Senior Lecturer Ken Garner, the programme leader of the BA Multimedia Journalism course said: "In a very strong year, Stephen not only got the highest overall average mark in the honours classification but uniquely every single one of his best nine modules were at 70% or higher: which means he showed absolutely consistent excellence in both practical and academic work throughout his two years with us.

"He joined us as a direct entrant and a mature student in third year, from Glasgow City College, and has taken to everything we asked him to do.

"Winning the best mobile journalism story at last month's Scottish Student Journalism Awards is another sign of just how good he is."
