Society names Dr Andrew McAuley Researcher of the Year

The work of Dr Andrew McAuley into drug and alcohol addictions has led to the Senior Research Fellow being named this year's Researcher of the Year 2018.

Dr Andrew McAuley said he was honoured to receive the award and is the first Scottish recipient to be commended by the Society for the Study of Addiction (SSA).  

As a Senior Research Fellow, Dr McAuley combines his work at the School of Health and Life Sciences with his position as a Senior Epidemiologist in the Sexual Health and Blood-Borne Virus Team at Health Protection Scotland.

He said: "I am honoured to be the first Scottish recipient of this prestigious award from SSA, the oldest organisation of its kind in the UK and internationally renowned for its scientific impact. The Society's aim is to promote the scientific understanding of addiction and supports researchers at all levels to achieve this through funding, conferences, and publication of the two highest impact journals in the addictions field globally.  I am grateful to many colleagues over a number of years who have supported and mentored me to this point in my career".

Dr McAuley received the the prestigious award from SSA, one of the oldest organisations of its kind in the UK, and formerly known as the Society for the Study and Cure of Inebriety in 1884. He was commended for his outstanding contribution to the addiction field, his research into alcohol and drug-related harms and harm-reduction policy initiatives as well as his research findings and the work he carries out as a policy advisor.
