Believe in yourselves, honorary guests tell graduates

“If you’re good at your job and you love what you do the opportunities will come your way − anywhere in the world. Commitment leads to confidence and confidence leads to enjoyment. If you enjoy your job, it’s a breeze.”

Those were the inspiring words from hotelier Ken McCulloch, one of the most prominent figures in the hotel and restaurant industry in the UK, who received a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in recognition of his outstanding commitment to the Scottish and UK hotel industry, displaying a passion for design, service and product development.

Ken joined almost 400 students graduating from the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment and the School of Health and Life Sciences, at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

He was also joined by food industry expert Jane Milton, who received a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) for her outstanding contribution to the food industry and to supporting GCU students; and Paul Morron MBE, founder member of Victim Support in Scotland, and a criminal justice services expert, who received a Doctor of Laws (LLD) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to criminal justice and social services.

Jane said: “I’m delighted on behalf of all of those who studied home economics to accept this honour. You can become truly accomplished in something you love, I implore you all to do the same. You will have a bigger impact on the world as a result. You shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt in both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.”

Paul said: “I’m an ordinary bloke from an ordinary background. It’s amazing what you can achieve. Believe in yourself and never lose that belief.”
