GCU is living its motto, according to honorary guests

Glasgow Caledonian University’s common good ethos was praised by honorary guests at the second of our winter graduation ceremonies.

Former nursery headteacher Anne O’Grady, who received a Doctor of the University (DUniv) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to early years education and support of GCU’s Caledonian Club initiative, said it was everyone’s job to help “break down the shame of poverty”.

She said: “This university for the common good wrapped its arms around the city’s most vulnerable families in the form of the Caledonian Club, inviting thousands of children and families in and reaching into their community and breaking down the myths that arise around who is able to go on to higher education. Be brave and ask yourself: what are you willing to stand up for?”

Anne joined 600 students graduating from the School of Health and Life Sciences, at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

She was also joined by Fiona McKenzie, co-founder and CEO of Centrestage, who received a Doctor of Letters (DLitt) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to leadership development in young people through the arts and community engagement; and Dr Ichak Adizes, management expert, CEO and Founder of The Adizes Institute, who received a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to management theory and practice worldwide.

Fiona said: “You should only be limited by the scope of your imagination to make the world a better place for everyone who is part of it − and everyone should be part of it.

“GCU is the best example of inclusive integrated educational excellence and, here, ideas and dreams are made real for social benefit.

“GCU walks the walk, so live your lives the way you’ve learned here − don’t just say it, ‘dae’ it. And always try to make your mum proud.”

Dr Adizes said: “I’m proud to be associated with the University for the Common Good. You broke the mould, teaching us not just how to know, but also how to feel. It’s a university with a heart.”
