GCU to host IAFFE annual conference

Glasgow Caledonian University is set to host the 28th annual conference of The International Association for Feminist Economics.

More than 350 delegates from across North America, Europe, Africa, India, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand are registered to attend the three-day conference, which takes place 27-29 June.

Professor Sara Cantillon, Director of the WiSE Centre for Economic Justice at GCU, said: "Having IAFFE come to Scotland is a testament to this country's international reputation for policy innovation and commitment to gender equality and is also a recognition of the leading role the Centre for Economic Justice plays in the global academic and activist community.

"Having this spotlight on Scotland is an important lever for change for us locally as it's an opportunity to bring learning from international feminist economists to bear on policy change at home."

This year there will be a special local plenary on Gender and Scotland's Economy, featuring Equalities Minister Christina McKelvie MSP, Lady Susan Rice, Chair of Scottish Fiscal Commission, Caroline Gardner, Auditor General, Emma Ritch, Executive Director of Close the Gap, and Talat Yaqoob, Executive Director of Equate Scotland.

Other plenaries will focus on the need to address inequalities through solidarity and intersectional approaches to the lived realities of people’s lives, the process to drive policy change, and the milestones achieved over the last 25 years of feminist economics.

Full details of the conference programme are available on IAFFE's website.

The 2019 Ailsa McKay Memorial Lecture will take place on the eve of the conference, on 26 June.

The lecture commemorates the founder of WISE who passed away in 2014. Professor Rhonda Sharp, of the University of South Australia, will deliver this year's lecture on Gender Responsive Budgeting in Challenging Times. The event is free and open to the public but tickets must be booked in advance.
