GCU promotes International Women's Day

Glasgow Caledonian University will mark International Women's Day on March 8 by reaffirming our commitment to promoting gender equality across our campuses.

GCU has been formally recognised for its commitment to promoting gender equality by attaining the prestigious Athena SWAN Institutional Bronze Award and we are now working hard toward achieving a Silver Award.  The Charter was established in 2005, with a particular focus on the careers of women in higher education and research in the areas of science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE, said: "International Women's Day is a day which allows us all to celebrate the enormous achievements of women around the world.  Achievements which really are important to record because we still have issues with gender equality across all societies.

"At Glasgow Caledonian University we are absolutely committed as a University committee of men and women to work together for the Common Good and to promote gender equality.

"In recent years we have been working really hard to reduce our gender pay gap across the University at all levels. We have very small gender pay gaps when you control for age and length of service, one of the smallest in the sector.

"40 percent of our professors are women and our Executive team is well balanced by gender.  We also promote family-friendly policies and dignity at work at all times.

"I am proud that our students and staff are committed to talking openly, in an outspoken way, about gender violence and harassment.

"There is certainly still a long way to go to complete gender equality and balance around the world but I am really proud of the students and staff of Glasgow Caledonian University who do promote gender equality through their activities and by example."
