Sir Tom Hunter be honoured by Glasgow Caledonian University

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter will be honoured by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) during its summer graduation ceremonies.

Sir Tom will receive a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to supporting educational and entrepreneurial projects in Scotland and around the world, and his extraordinary commitment to charitable causes of remarkable range and scope.

Also being honoured at the summer ceremonies, which take place on July 2, 3 and 4, will be Jo Malone CBE who will receive a Doctor of Science in recognition of her outstanding contribution to business creation in the UK and for her commitment to education.

In 2016, Jo was appointed as an Honorary Professor of GCU and presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her outstanding achievements in the luxury sector within the UK and internationally.

Seven honorary guests will join more than 2000 students graduating from Glasgow School for Business and Society, the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment and the School of Health and Life Sciences, at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

The other recipients are:

  • Nozipho January-Bardill, Chairperson of the Council of Nelson Mandela University and Chairperson of UN Global Compact Local Network, South Africa, who will receive a Doctor of Laws (LLD) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the work of the United Nations on the elimination of racial discrimination, the rights of women, social justice and governance.
  • Humanitarian Zainab Salbi, founder of Women for Women International, who will receive a Doctor of Laws (LLD) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to humanitarian issues, in particular, her work with women war survivors with Women for Women International.
  • Donalda MacKinnon, Director of BBC Scotland, who will receive Doctor of Letters (DLitt) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Scottish media, her cultural contribution to Glasgow and support of GCU MATV students.
  • Actor Gavin Mitchell, perhaps best known for his role as Boaby the Barman in TV show Still Game, will receive a Doctor of Letters in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the television and media industry, together with his commitment to charitable causes and support of the University’s MA TV Fiction Writing students.
  • Muzoon Almellehan, human rights activist and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, who will receive a Doctor of Laws (LLD), in recognition of her outstanding contribution to advocacy for girls’ education and humanitarian issues.
