GCU Principal pays tribute to Scottish football great Dr Walter Smith OBE
GCU’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE has shared the following statement to mark the passing of Dr Walter Smith OBE.
It is with great sadness that we share the news that Walter Smith, who became an Honorary Graduate of our University in 2012, passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021.
Walter grew up in Carmyle in the East End of Glasgow and from an early age football was a big part of his life. He went on to become one of the most decorated and successful managers in the history of Scottish football winning 27 major honours as Assistant Manager and Manager with Glasgow Rangers, as well as achieving great success with Scotland and Everton.
Walter Smith has made a major contribution to the field of football through his strategic leadership, his drive and determination and his deep understanding of the game and of its management. Our honorary graduates however are chosen, not only because they are outstanding in their field, but also because they practise the mission and values of our University, and that was particularly true of Walter. Walter achieved greatness off the pitch through his charity work and overall kindness, embodying the common good.
Our heartfelt condolences and thoughts go out to Walter’s family and friends at this difficult time.
