Civil Engineers win with MERIT
A team of Glasgow Caledonian Civil Engineering students won an international competition that saw them take charge of a virtual construction company.
The International MERIT Tournament is supported by the Institution of Civil Engineers and is based on an interactive construction-industry business game. Each team manages a virtual construction company in direct competition with other companies, and corporate performance is assessed over 10 periods. This year, in the four-team final, the Glasgow Caledonian team competed with, and outperformed, teams from the University of Manchester, the National University of Singapore and the University of Minnesota.
The 2023 champions are honours-level students on the partnership Civil Engineering programme with the Jinling Institute of Technology: Xiaoyuan Xu, Yuxiao Lin, Yuan Ou and Zixiang Xu.
They were supported by Programme Leader Professor Ben Zhang, and Depute Head of Department Dr Mark Phillipson.
Dr Phillipson said: “It has been a pleasure mentoring this student team. They are an exceptionally talented and hardworking group who richly deserved this success, and I am sure they will go on to even more success in their future careers. Our students continue to demonstrate that they can compete and succeed on a global stage.”
