Complicating the Narrative - London premier for D.Rad documentary
A documentary inspired by two art exhibitions held in Belgrade and Paris designed to bring together social scientists, humanities scholars and artists is being premiered in London at the TJ Boulting Gallery on Monday, October 23.
The exhibition and documentary are part of the EC Horizon 2020 D.Rad project, based in Glasgow Caledonian University’s WISE Centre for Economic Justice, which involves researchers from 17 countries.
The De-Radicalisation in Europe and Beyond: Detect, Resolve, Re-integrate (D.Rad) project seeks to understand what makes people move from a non-radicalised to a radicalised position and offers arts and sports, spatial planning and civic education focused interventions as prevention.
The film will be followed by a roundtable discussion about the role of art in academia, making research accessible through art, and the potential for artists and researchers to collaborate effectively.
Key speakers at the roundtable will include Glasgow Caledonian’s Professor Umut Korkut, D.Rad Project Lead and Professor of International Politics, Nathaniel Pitt, Director for the gallery Division of Labour, Dr Benjamin Worku-Dix, a Senior Fellow at SOAS University of London and Founding Director of PositiveNegatives which aims to amplify research through engaging storytelling, and D.Rad Documentary Director Manca Juvan. It will also be attended by the D.Rad exhibition curator Dr. Maggie Laidlaw from GCU.
Professor Umut Korkut said: “The D.Rad documentary is not based on typical art exhibitions. It shows artistic forms of expression using diverse media to illustrate the importance of convivial and ‘non-politicised’ relations to intervene in radicalisation. It focuses on making people recognise that they are shareholders of common problems rather than being rivals of each other in religious, racial, class or any other terms.”
The D.Rad project is seeking to identify trends in radical ideologies, help shape policies to improve social inclusion, and forecast the potential impact on society of widening inequalities.
