Four academics contribute to special edition of Scottish Affairs
Four academics from Glasgow Caledonian have contributed to a special edition of Scotland’s longest-running journal on contemporary political and social issues to mark International Women's Day.
Professor Angela O'Hagan, Dr Katy Proctor, Professor Nancy Lombard and Dr Karla Perez Portilla all feature in the March issue of Scottish Affairs.
The peer-reviewed journal publishes articles on matters of concern to people who are interested in the development of Scotland.
The special International Women's Day edition was partly inspired by the BBC Scotland series The Women Who Changed Modern Scotland.
Dr Karla Pérez Portilla, lecturer in Law, reflects on her experiences in the field of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion as a Mexican migrant in Glasgow, and with her work with Police Scotland, in her piece.
Professor Angela O’Hagan explores the momentum for gender budgeting in Scotland since devolution and what needs to happen to make this a reality.
Meanwhile, Dr Katy Proctor shines a light on Scotland's ‘unseen change makers’ in the context of the legislative change to tackle gender-based violence. Professor Nancy Lombard explores the feminist history and framing of this legislation and outlines how Scotland came to adopt a gender-based approach.
Journal co-editors Dr Helen O'Shea and Professor Kim Barker, writing in the introduction to the special issue, said: "Women have played a pivotal role in the development of modern Scottish society, but they have not always been recognised, acknowledged or celebrated for their achievements.
"As we mark International Women's Day, we celebrate all of those whose shoulders we stand upon while also sounding the alarm as Scotland stands at the crossroads of progress."
Both Professor Lombard's and Dr Proctor's pieces are available to read for free. To access the issue, visit Edinburgh University Press.
