GCU among UK’s best in Good University Guide 2023
Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) has climbed eight places in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023, moving from 60th to 52nd out of 132 universities in the UK.
This is the highest increase of any Scottish university and makes GCU the top performing modern university in Scotland.
We have moved up a fantastic 57 places in the last six years alone.
The rise is due to improvements in the University's National Student Survey (NSS) scores for teaching quality and student experience, our excellent degree-completion rates and positive outcomes for GCU graduates. It is also due to our strong performance in REF 2021, which saw us ranked the top modern university in Scotland for research.
At a subject level, three GCU subjects have ranked first in the UK: Physiotherapy, Radiography and Food Science.
Many of our other subject areas have also performed extremely well, with a further three ranked in the UK Top 10 in the Times' subject groups: Subjects aligned to medicine (2/88), Hospitality, Leisure, Recreation and Tourism (6/50) and Pharmacology and Pharmacy (10/42). Overall, more than 60% of our subjects are in the top 25% in the UK.
The subjects that have seen the greatest increase in their ranking include Biological Sciences (+28), Communications and Media (+23), Computer Science (+20) and Nursing (+15).
Principal and Vice-Chancellor Professor Pamela Gillies CBE FRSE said: "GCU is the most improved Scottish university in the league table, having risen by eight places from 60th position last year, and is the top performing modern university in Scotland. This is a remarkable achievement for us and we should all share a sense of satisfaction in our progress.
"Thank you once again for your endeavours on behalf of our students in delivering transformative education and in producing research and business development with real impact."
Aimed at students on the path to finding a university place, the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 provides them with a comprehensive overview of higher education in the UK. The rankings are based on eight indicators, including student satisfaction with teaching quality and the wider student experience, research quality, graduate prospects, staff/student ratio and entry standards.
