GCU teams up with Strathclyde Sport for new sports nutrition collaboration
Glasgow Caledonian University’s School of Health and Life Sciences has teamed up with Strathclyde Sport at the University of Strathclyde to offer a unique postgraduate research Sports Nutritionist studentship opportunity.
They are looking for a research-minded practitioner to study for a Sports Nutrition Masters by Research (MRes) degree and gain experience working with performance athletes at Strathclyde Sport.
Dr Alexandra Mavroeidi, Reader and Head of the Department of Occupational Therapy and Human Nutrition and Dietetics, is excited at this innovative collaboration with Strathclyde Sport.
The part-time MRes student will get full sponsorship of their tuition fees by Strathclyde Sport and will be supervised by Strathclyde Sport’s Performance Sports Manager Dr Dave Sykes, and Dr Mavroeidi at Glasgow Caledonian.
The student will have 18 months to collect data and up to 24 months to submit their MREs thesis. During that time, they will be expected to spend up to eight hours a week giving sports nutrition advice and support to Strathclyde Sport athletes under the supervision of Dr Sykes.
Dr Mavroeidi said: “I’m really excited about this MRes collaboration with Strathclyde Sport. It’s a fantastic opportunity for a dietitian/nutritionist or someone who has a sport science degree with a passion for working with athletes and an interest in sports nutrition.
“The candidate will be expected to immerse themselves in a vibrant university sporting environment at Strathclyde Sport, providing sport-specific nutritional support, while also carrying out a degree at a postgraduate level with GCU. This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious individual to develop their skills as an evidence-based practitioner and applied researcher.
‘’This MREs is designed for those seeking to progress to further research, such as a PhD, and also professionals who seek to enhance their skills and expertise, and gain experience working in a highly completive sporting environment.”
Dr Sykes said: “As an organisation, Strathclyde Sport aspires to provide our student-athletes with practical, up-to-date and evidence-based guidance.
“Consequently, we are thrilled to be working in collaboration with GCU on this bold and ambitious project, which we believe will ‘bridge the gap’ between applied practice and academic research, and subsequently have a substantial positive impact on the student (sporting) experience for those studying for a dual career at the University of Strathclyde.”
Applications close on September 17 and the studentship begins in October. For more information on how to apply click here - http://bit.ly/3RbGQbJ
