Glasgow Caledonian takes the lead in tackling cost of living crisis with social innovation

Cost of Living Crisis and Social Innovation event

Glasgow Caledonian University is behind a major event focusing on how social innovation can help tackle the cost of living crisis affecting millions of households across the country.

The Cost of Living Crisis and Social Innovation event takes place on Tuesday, 28 February, from 5.30-7.30pm in The Melting Pot in Edinburgh, which is Scotland's Centre for Social Innovation and one of the oldest coworking communities in the world.

It has been organised by the Glasgow Caledonian-led Social Innovation Connect UK team, launched by the University’s Research and Innovation Office, and The Melting Pot.

Glasgow Caledonian’s Research and Innovation Director Mark Anderson is encouraging everyone to get involved in the conversation, learn from social innovators and find out what actions they are taking to tackle the current cost of living crisis.

Mark said: “The cost of living crisis is affecting the population in many ways, with millions of households being forced to cut back on buying essentials like groceries, medicines and housing costs, to pay to cover their energy and other monthly bills.

“The activity of third-sector organisations affected by a lack of funding, and whose actions are vital to many vulnerable people, are also suffering the consequences.

"Come along to the event and find out how the crisis is affecting our whole ecosystem, how it’s preventing organisations and individuals from achieving their vision - and affecting people's lives, and what role social innovation plays in this.

“We will be exploring the current situation, hear what some organisations and social innovators are doing and share ideas of practical actions we can all take.”

Social innovation is about identifying and rolling out new ideas to help create a fairer, healthier and more sustainable society. For Glasgow Caledonian, it’s about working directly with communities as co-creators to ensure our research has real impact in their lives and the wider world around us. Whereas, commercial innovation is about generating wealth, social innovation is about delivering positive social change.
