Journalism student scoops Scottish Press Award nomination
A Glasgow Caledonian journalism student has scooped a nomination at the Scottish Press Awards.
Christiana Opoku, who is in the final year of our BA Multimedia Journalism, has been nominated for Student of the Year.
The 44th Scottish Press Awards, to be held in June, will celebrate the very best national, regional and digital journalism from across Scotland.
Christiana, who impressed judges with her portfolio of work for The Glasgow Standard, a news website run by our multimedia journalism students, said: "I'm beyond happy and humbled to have been nominated.
"I'm so grateful for the supportive classmates and lecturers at Glasgow Caledonian for reminding me time and time again about why I chose journalism.
"Pursuing a degree during a pandemic was not easy at all but it was all worth it thanks to them."
Several Glasgow Caledonian graduates feature in the shortlisted entries across 34 categories this year.
Abbi Garton-Crosbie, from the Class of 2017, has been nominated in the Best Coverage of a Live Event for The National. Ross Hanvidge, who graduated in 2018, has been shortlisted for Local Reporter of the Year, and Ali Brian, from the Class of 2013, is in the running Podcast of the Year for The FFS Show Podcast for The Ferret.
Glasgow Caledonian’s Multimedia Journalism course is the only degree in Scotland to be accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.
The 2023 Scottish Press Awards will take place at the DoubleTree Hilton in Glasgow on June 7.
