TV legend Mal Young returns to GCU for writing workshops

TV writer and producer Mal Young returned to GCU today to hold writing workshops with the next generation of screenwriting talent.

The GCU honorary graduate met students on our MA TV Fiction Writing course before holding a masterclass with alumni of the UK's only full-time masters focussed on writing TV drama.

The former Brookside writer and Controller of Continuing Drama at the BBC is currently working on an eight-part series based on the life of the singer Amy Winehouse.

Halcyon Studios is developing the series after securing the rights to the bestselling book Saving Amy by Daphne Barak.

Mal said: "It's early days with the Amy Winehouse project but I'm thrilled to be involved.

"There's been a great interest in the last couple of years of drama series based on real people but a fictionalised version of that - everything from The Crown to The Sex Pistols.

"People are fascinated when a drama takes you inside a real subject and that's what I'll be doing."

Professor Ann Marie Di Mambro, of MA TV Fiction Writing, said: "I'm just delighted to welcome Mal back to GCU.

"It's fantastic for our students to receive feedback from someone of his calibre. We're so grateful to him."
