BA (Hons) in International Fashion Business
Freelance Marketing Assistant
We’re interested to learn more about graduates’ time at Glasgow Caledonian and the path they’ve taken since completing their studies. Conor Blessing graduated in 2022 with a BA (Hons) in International Fashion Business and is currently working as a Freelance Marketing Assistant.
When applying to University Conor found the International Fashion business course to be a perfect fit for him, as it allowed him to gain a business degree while still exploring his creative fashion interests. One of his University highlights was working on a project for Hiut Denim Co where he was commissioned to design his own clothing range for the company's next collection. During this project, he explored zero-waste pattern cutting and digital printing to expand his skills in the fashion industry and was later awarded best design by the company's representative.
Outside of class, he was a member of Enactus GCU, a charity aimed at students to help improve their local and worldwide communities. In his final year, he became class representative while also volunteering at R:evolve Recycle, a swap shop aimed at reducing textile waste going into landfills.
Since graduating he has worked as a research assistant with Dr Lynn Wilson FRSA for her Circular Economy Wardrobe project. This role involved working on web design and event marketing while carrying out research. He was then brought into the main business as a freelance marketing assistant. In this role he went on to participate in various projects such as the Scotland x Scotland Re:Design project where he designed an outfit that campaigned for the building of more social housing in Scotland which led to him being awarded the Fashion for Social Good Award for his design.
Before taking this course, he was unaware of the harmful effects that many fashion companies have on the planet and as he explored this further, it led him to begin focusing on growing as a sustainable designer to help combat these issues. He is now currently developing his own fashion brand called ‘Conor Blessing’ where he is using his zero waste and digital print skills to create sustainable products.
GCU has opened my eyes to new paths in my career that will have long-lasting benefits for the Common Good.
