Development Project Manager at SSEN Transmission
Josh Robertson’s journey from Glasgow Caledonian University has taken him from the heart of the nuclear sector to the forefront of renewable energy. Now, having started Engineer a Career Ltd, a Social Enterprise, he is committed to supporting the next generation of engineers through sharing the stories and experiences of today’s engineers through articles, podcasts and live events. Join him for his upcoming live podcast at Glasgow Caledonian on 29 January, a dynamic event designed to inspire and connect future engineers.
Josh chose to study at GCU because the course perfectly aligned with his interests in both engineering and design. His standards were high: He wanted a course that balanced creativity and technical skills, but that was also accredited by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers to support his goal of becoming a Chartered Engineer.
Not only was GCU the perfect fit - he found it to be a genuinely inspiring place for his learning.
"The atmosphere around the place in terms of the support you got from the lecturers and the hands-on approach really benefitted me."
"The distance between the student and the lecturers was quite small, so you felt there was a much closer engagement for whenever I needed help."
Since graduating, Josh has built an impressive and diverse career in engineering, gaining experience across multiple sectors.
After leaving GCU, Josh began as a Project Engineer at Doosan Babcock, focusing on nuclear technology and maintaining the UK's nuclear fleet. He then moved to Babcock International, working on submarine maintenance and advancing to an Engineering Capability Manager.
Josh currently works for SSEN Transmission, a major UK energy supplier, where he manages the development of projects that ensure the electrical grid accommodates new renewable energy sources.
"At the moment I'm working on a lot of projects which involve connecting offshore wind, onshore wind, onshore solar and essentially working on projects which are helping the country meet their net zero goals."
Throughout his career, Josh has been passionate about helping others with their engineering journeys, offering support through tutoring, mentoring, and coaching. Wanting to expand his impact, he turned this passion into action in January by launching Engineer a Career.
Engineer a Career is a social enterprise that offers guidance and resources for aspiring engineers, from school students preparing for exams to young professionals seeking chartership or career advancement, all to help them achieve their goals.
It provides resources through articles, social media, and a podcast series featuring diverse engineers, including university graduates, apprentices, and professionals from top companies like Wood, Thales, SSE, and Babcock International.
Josh's vision for Engineer a Career extends beyond the digital realm.
“In October, we recorded our first live podcast at University of Dundee. We now aim to take it to other universities and companies across the UK, striving to support and inspire as many aspiring engineers as possible.”
With plans to expand across the country, Josh is determined to create a robust support network that will help guide the next generation of engineers toward success.
