Elaine Boyd
Elaine Boyd FCCA OBE
HNC in Accountancy
Director of Audit Quality and Appointments at Audit Scotland
Growing up, Elaine faced low expectations at school and was told to work in a shop because of her cerebral palsy. But she never let it limit her.
She was great with numbers and her outlook changed when she met her parent’s accountant, who encouraged her and told her about the apprenticeship route and studying at university part-time.
Securing an apprenticeship and part-time study at GCU was key to Elaine starting on a positive road.
She said: “The people I met in my workplace and GCU were much more positive and encouraging about what I could achieve.”
Now she is an auditor, accountant, adaptive sports enthusiast, aviator, Director at Audit Scotland and Charity Trustee for Exceed Worldwide and has recently been named in the 2023 King’s New Year’s Honours.
No limits
Elaine’s passions have been driven by raising the expectations of what people with disabilities can do with the right support and goals.
She said: “I’ve always believed firmly that we shouldn’t be pushed by our problems but led by our dreams. As a society, we have lots more to do to become truly inclusive and equal, but I’m proud of playing my part to support people with disabilities to have a voice, and to access opportunities regardless of their circumstances.”
The OBE followed several accolades and achievements for Elaine including being appointed to Chair of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Scotland’s Committee and being listed on the Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 list for the second time.
“GCU felt like a door was being opened for me to study and achieve the goals I had set for myself. How my course aided me in my career is difficult to put into words but my ACCA qualification has been fundamental in my career journey. Not only does it enable me to carry out my current role but it has also allowed me to connect more widely with the accountancy profession as Chair of the ACCA Scotland Members Committee and a member of the Financial Reporting Council Stakeholder insight group.”
