Ross McGhee

For over 100 years, the Society of Radiographers (SoR) has advocated for radiography professionals at the heart of patient care, and now our very own Ross McGhee is its 85^th President.

At the age of 34, he is the youngest President in its 102-year history.

Early into his career, he became a health and safety representative for the Society of Radiographers in a time of great change in the department.

During that time, Ross conducted research into workplace stress and the report escalated to senior management.

He said: “I found myself in direct negotiations to better working conditions for my colleagues. This saw me elected to the Scottish National Council in the time of the coalition government trying to roll back health and safety legislation.”

Since then, Ross has developed significant leadership experience in UK-wide healthcare, working across healthcare quality improvement, public health, health inequality, and healthcare sustainability projects.

He is also a senior therapeutic radiographer (Pre-Treatment) at the Lanarkshire Beatson Satellite Centre, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Never give up

When asked what advice he would give to students and graduates in radiography, Ross said: “Never give up and try not to underestimate what you are capable of. I nearly gave up and decided to drop out twice when I was struggling academically.

"I had a wonderful lecturer who convinced me to stay. I am not certain where I would have ended up had I thrown in the towel.”
