Iona Wright
Graduate Apprentice in Software Development
Software Developer at Lloyds Banking Group
Iona is a Software Development graduate apprentice at Lloyd's banking group and Glasgow Caledonian University. She was drawn to the programme due to its industry-focused modules which were structured to equip her with all of the necessary skills needed to enter the workforce with confidence.
She said: "It wasn't just about the coding - it was actually taking an application from the start all the way through. You're looking at how to start an application in a business, how do you design it and how do you communicate that with others."
Supporting academic excellence through real-world practice
Iona explains that the academic topics were closely tied to her hands-on experience at Lloyds. For example, she completed a Kubernetes module at GCU. This was communicated to Lloyds and Iona was then placed on a project which gave her the opportunity to use Kubernetes in a real life scenario. The symbiotic relationship between GCU and Lloyd's means that Iona has been able to implement her learning almost immediately and truly discover where her strengths and interests lie.
Iona has recently graduated with a first class BSc in Software Development and a wealth of experience under her belt.
I think we can encourage more women to enter the tech industry by removing the stigma.
