Part-time jobs while studying

Finding part-time jobs while studying

Many of our students work part-time while studying. This can reduce debt, allow you to continue with your studies, and help support your family.

Part-time work also benefits you by allowing you to gain experience and skills that will not only look impressive on your CV, but also give you essential skills for your future career. These essential skills such as communication, time management and teamworking will give you an advantage over applicants who haven't yet entered the workforce.

You may also find that you'll build up your network, which will be useful for you when you go on to look for graduate or postgraduate roles.

While Glasgow Caledonian encourages part-time work because of its many benefits, we'd recommend a maximum of 20 hours per week to ensure that it doesn't interfere with your studies.

If you're an international student,  you'll also need to check your visas for regulations regarding employment when studying and you'll need to apply for a National Insurance number.

Part-time roles are advertised on Career Hub and we'd advise you to check there regularly as these are updated several times a week. The Careers Service also has a blog where information and advice on all career matters can be found. Please register for this and follow  the Careers Service Instagram page.

You'll find part-time jobs advertised in our CareerHub portal.

Read our Guide to looking for a part-time job with many clickable links to employers.

Another good way of getting a part-time job is to apply speculatively. Think about where you'd like to work and do some research into the types of places that are local to you. You can then put together your CV and cover letter and apply directly. Even if the employers you contact are not currently hiring, they may well keep your CV on file.

The Careers Advisers have appointments available to review CVs, application forms and provide advice for interviews. These can be booked through CareerHub.

We also have regular drop-in clinics in the Campus Life Lounge, on Level 1 of the George Moore building, details of which can be found in the events section of CareerHub.
