Samuel Stewart (1887 – 1976)

Political activist

Samuel Stewart was born in Glasgow, and lived in the Townhead area. He served his apprenticeship as a carpenter. During the early 1900s, Samuel was a member of the Socialist Labour Party, and worked with John Maclean, keeping the books, distributing the literature, and so on. With the outbreak of the First World War, he joined the Highland Light Infantry, later transferring to the Royal Flying Corps. He served in France and in Egypt. On returning to civilian life he worked in the catering business. In later years, Sam returned to the Highlands where his people had originally come from. He became a crofter and worked with and for the crofting communities. During his last years, he was a postmaster. Samuel died at the age of 89.
