Publication

The University is strongly committed to the principle that the outcomes arising from its publicly funded research are a public good that should be made as widely available as possible. Publishing your research helps make it publicly accessible.

There are a large number of formal publication channels for scholarly communication:

  • Peer-reviewed journal articles
  • Books or book chapters
  • Computer programs
  • Conference or symposium papers, or contributions to academic meetings
  • Patents
  • Reports

There are also informal publication channels you may wish to consider:

  • Magazine articles
  • Blogposts
  • Podcasts
  • Wikis

In the process of deciding how and where to publish your research, you should consider:

  • The desired reach and influence of your publication (e.g. considering journal metrics and the significance of the peer-review process)
  • The nature of your research (whether it has been undertaken by an individual, a small group of colleagues or larger international group)
  • How quickly you wish to make your research publicly accessible
  • Budgetary limitations in terms of publication processing costs

GCU's Open Access Policy

The university recognises open access as the best publication route for making research as widely and openly available as possible.

In 2014 the University Senate approved a Policy on Open Access to Research making it mandatory for staff to deposit full text copies of author final versions of journal articles and conference proceedings in GCU's Pure research information system and repository.

Corresponding authors at GCU can also benefit from the Library's current open access publishing agreements with major academic publishers. These agreements allow open access publishing of articles at no cost to authors, or with a discount.
