Academic integrity

Here at Glasgow Caledonian University, we want you to understand that practising academic integrity means keeping our values in mind when you are doing your academic work, particularly when using the work of others.

AI and assessment

Artificial intelligence technology is developing at an exponential rate. Increasingly sophisticated language processing applications are available, such as ChatGPT, that can provide fast and credible answers when asked questions on a variety of topics. At Glasgow Caledonian University we are actively exploring contemporary AI tools to better understand the exciting potential that they offer to deepen students’ learning and their benefits to the world of work. However, unless an assessment explicitly states that AI tools can be used, then their use is considered academic misconduct as it is a form of ghostwriting. GCU’s Code of Student Conduct makes this clear and provides further student guidance on AI and assessment.

Responsible use of AI

This video has been developed by students highlighting the importance of responsible use of AI.

Don't cheat yourself

This student guidance has been developed to support you to understand what good academic practice is and how to avoid inadvertently engaging in academic misconduct including plagiarism, collusion and cheating. It also highlights what penalties can be applied if you are found guilty of academic misconduct.

Dont Cheat Yourself is part of the wider GCU Student Study Essentials Organisation on GCU Learn. Download the guidance document below and follow the link and instructions below to access Student Study Essentials, where you can navigate to Don't Cheat Yourself.

Get engaged and get going

Resources under the ‘get engaged and get going’ heading should help you to engage with and make the most of online and blended learning as you progress through your learning experience.

Engaging with your assessments

When you submit an assessment through GCU Learn, Turnitin compares it to text in its enormous database of academic text from student work, books, journal articles, websites. To find out more about Turnitin, take a look at the GCU Learn section of GCU Go resources. In addition to essays and reports, you may be assessed through wikis and blogs. You can also find information on this on our GCU Learn section.
